A good friend opened her home Tuesday night for good, old-fashioned, girl talk. We sat on her comfy couches and chatted over cups of fresh coffee and hot chocolate.

While the aroma of coffee is intoxicating, I'm not a big fan of it's taste. Knowing this, my good friend whipped up a quick batch of hot chocolate. And when I say "whipped up", I mean she poured cocoa powder and cold milk into the contraption below and pushed a button.

Watching it whir around in the cocomotion was pure fun (I mean, would be... if I were a kid, of course) and the taste was delectable. Foamy and rich, without the scalded milk after-effect of the microwave.

The best part is it makes a large amount in one go! Sounds like a must-have for parties and overnight guests to me!

What other contraptions (or chocolate-goodness) am I missing out on?

Books in Bed

Last night, Eric and I turned in a bit earlier than usual.

We lay side-by-side in bed, reading.

Wild at Heart his book of choice; mine The Meaning of Marriage.

(We're not always so studious. I recently spent a bittersweet ten days forcing my lids open in the wee hours of the morning nearly devouring The Hunger Games trilogy. Before that, I enjoyed Bossypants. Tina made me laugh (and blush) every few pages. I'm talking about literally lol'ing. The kind where people in Panera gave me funny looks and my husband kept asking "what?" in a nonchalant way until I read him what's so funny - and then he laughed too, of course.)

A chuckle here, a sigh there. Simultaneously gleaning wisdom from others' lives. A peaceful, connecting experience.

So many of our evenings are brimming with activity right up to the breaking point and then quickly numbed by the TV before trudging off to sleep.

(Ironically, since we no longer have cable, the only show on around this time of night is 30 Rock. Tina is getting more than her fair share of exposure in our home. She and Baldwin have us laughing then, as well).

Activity is wonderful and TV is fun.

But I rather like ending my night with a good book. Somehow, snuggling up with my honey who is doing the same makes it all the better.

Earlier today I walked outside to call you. I flipped open my phone and scrolled through a loooong list of recent calls before I got to your name.

Why hadn't we talked on the phone in so long?

Oh yeah... I smiled.

We just spent the whooooole weekend together. Who needs a phone?

At first this made me sad because it's now Monday and the weekend is over.

Then it hit me. I get to see you tonight when I come home from work. And tomorrow, too. And the next day and the next until it's once again the weekend and I can set my phone aside and spend a little time with you.

This was a big revelation today. It made my heart swell.

I just love living with you.

Butterfly Specimen Poster

I am not particularly drawn to butterflies and certainly avoid any clothing or accessories they find themselves fluttering on.

I am, however, attracted to this beautiful print from UO.

The paper appears vintage, as though recently ripped from an old textbook. My mom (who dislikes all butterfly decor) will probably be pained to read that I would love to frame and hang this print in my home.

San Francisco Guide: Good Eats

One of our favorite things to do when exploring a new city is discover the best local food. We spent the week before our departure scouring blogs for tips on restaurants off the beaten path offering good eats at a decent price.

I can only remember one meal that didn't absolutely wow us. For your sake (and theirs), I've left that particular spot off our list. Enjoy!

Pizzeria Delfina
We walked a mile and a half for this pizza.
Up and down each hill, we repeated "I sure hope this is worth it". It was.

We kept it simple with a Margherita Pizza. The tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil need not boast of their freshness. Their strong individual flavors paired together made me oh so happy. But what really took it over the top was the unexpected extra virgin olive oil sitting above the sauce.

House of Nanking

We waited in line outside this Chinatown restaurant for a coveted spot inside their cozy dining area. And by cozy, I mean cramped. We heard from locals that there is always a line to get in. Eric requested the House of Nanking for the remainder of our trip and continues to do so when asked what he wants to for dinner at our home in Alabama. Ha!

We both ordered the classic Chinese dish Sesame Chicken which, to our delight, came with sweet potato wedges and loads of white sticky rice.

El Farolito

We rode the bus to the Mission district, past hordes of people and eclectic shops and nearly missed this particular burrito place among many others in the area. We ordered at the counter and helped ourselves to chips and a plethora of salsa selections while our burritos were rolled.

I should mention that while I have a special affinity for Mexican food, I also have a special loathing for burritos. I never order them because it seems like each bite brings out only one boring ingredient. Bite of rice, bite of meat, bite of beans, bite of sour cream. No thank you.

I set aside my disdain based on recommendations and selected the Al Pastor Super Burrito. Oh my. Favorite meal of the trip hands down. Every bite packed a punch of flavors making me wish I had the stomach to actually finish the thing. Eric ordered a Chicken Super Burrito with guacamole and almost did.

Nick's Crispy Tacos

We were wet from fog and starving by the time we reached Nick's Crispy Tacos, which operates as a taco stand by day and a creepy red themed bar by night. When the menu read "soft unless otherwise specified" we were thoroughly confused and prepared for disappointment.

Luckily, we discovered Nicks way (any taco made crispy with guacamole and jack cheese). Yes please! Crispy at Nick's means two soft shells with the outer shell lightly fried once stuffed. Folks, I've gotta learn how to make these at home. We both agreed the chicken tacos were the best, topped with complimentary green salsa squeezed from a bottle. We also enjoyed the homemade chips loaded with fresh pico salsa.

Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food

After a world tour our bodies craved a comforting home-style brunch. The sign out front reading "just real good good", the walls lined with vintage posters and gadgets, the couple drinking milk shakes before noon and the waitress with a healthy girth and hearty smile all invited us to relax and enjoy.

I took comfort in a plate sized (extra thin) pancake, bacon and crispy fried french toast. I still have no idea what that slice of bread went through but, suffice it to say, it tasted amazing. Eric relaxed with a giant breakfast burrito and a bowl of fresh fruit.

We surprisingly spent almost no more money on food than we do here in Birmingham and enjoyed each meal as much as the one before.

Yosemite

Eric and I recently spent our second anniversary on the west coast.

Being the well-balanced travel partners that we are, we stayed in both the city of San Francisco and the wide open spaces of Yosemite. It was the perfect kind of vacation, where each day brought a new and unexpected adventure and we were truly sad to say goodbye.

This week, I'd love to share pictures and tips from our trip.

We'll start with the breathtaking Yosemite (I may, or may not, have had a slight panic attack driving into the valley). Rock walls shoot up thousands of feet from the ground, wild life intermingle with visitors and the scenery is absolutely stunning.

A brief summary: we slept in a canvas tent in Curry Village, rode bikes around the valley, explored Camp 4 and Yosemite Falls, hiked 4.8 miles up (at an elevation of 3200 ft) to Glacier Point and basically jogged all the way down for pizza, which became the staple meal of our stay. Anything with a smell was stored in the bear box outside our tent. My knees and hips have never hurt so bad and I have never slept so good.

We stayed in Yosemite Valley for two nights and crammed as much activity as possible into the one full day we were there. A hike up Glacier Point is a must for anyone wanting multiple viewpoints of the park including Half Dome and El Capitan.

I can't help but adore a husband who pushes me beyond my limits and encourages me to find beauty in the simplest things.

Pick Up the Phone

Today I am suited up with a scarf, boots and printed tights. It's quite cold outside and a strong case could be made that the end of the year is drawing near.

How pleased I was, then, to come across this article while defrosting in my office.

The article documents what we already know: people simply don't call each other anymore. It's quite funny (and relatable) to read about typical reactions to the phone ringing. At first, a sense of dread that the person on other line is the bearer of bad news, only to be followed by an altogether different sense of dread that they merely want to talk, interrupting important time that could be spent doing other things.

Funny. Relatable. But sad, too.

Which brings me to the point of why reading this article on a cold October day makes me happy. As you may recall, I started out 2011 with a list of goals, written in a small notebook that successfully made the rounds of purses as the seasons changed. As the months passed, I shared a few of my goals here and took time to evaluate my progress. This article, however, forced me to take a hard look at one goal I've let slip by unnoticed. Digging into the pocket of my latest purse (a red saddle bag, in case you needed to visualize it), I grabbed the notebook and reluctantly flipped through the pages until I found it.

Goal number 6: Learn to be a better friend. Take risks. Pick up the phone.

Ouch.

Let me explain. It's not that I don't want to be a better friend. I most certainly do. But insecurities and laziness often get the best of me. This particular goal was written with purposeful intention. It's long been my desire to be the kind of woman who not only remembers birthdays and has cute parties at Christmastime, but also relates during hardships and rejoices during victories. Who is vulnerable enough to be herself and and relies on God to be better than herself for the sake of others.

Who picks up the phone for crying out loud!

I'll spare you the details of my insecurities and laziness to simply say this: I've got a lot of work to do. I'm so grateful to have the remainder of this year to focus on being a better friend.

Minimalism: a Follow-up

This weekend was refreshing.

Friday night, my sister announced her forthcoming peanut (due in March!) and we slept in to a near-embarrassing time Saturday morning.

Only I'm not embarrassed. It was lovely.

Last month, I shared my desire to move towards a balanced, practical minimalism in my life. We dedicated a little of our weekend towards this goal, which made it all the more refreshing.

Our progress:

1. We scoured our closets and drawers for clothes that are out of style, no longer fit or never see the light of day. They are now piled in a bag awaiting their delivery to the thrift store.

2. We spent yesterday evening at the park with friends. Eric and Shaun ran while Bethany and I walked and chatted. It was already dark and a little spooky walking on the trail through the woods. The best part? There were hundreds of twinkling lighting bugs and it was all free!

3. I planned this week's meals around similar ingredients to make sure we utilize what's in our pantry and refrigerator before it goes bad. Because it's just the two of us, this can be a huge source of waste!

4. We (finally) organized our recycling. The three full garbage bags are ready to be dropped off and a pantry in our kitchen is now empty again.

Cookie Dough Dip

It's Friday.

It's Friday and all I can muster at the end of that "sentence" is a period. In less than ten minutes (at quittin' time), I'll be way more enthused. Right now, I'm drained from a week of working.

Speaking of work, our office had a small get-together one night this week. To the sheer excitement of some and total disgust of others, I announced my contribution to be cookie dough dip. In case you are confused, like a few of my friends, let me explain:

Cookie dough dip = all the goodness of cookie dough (butter, brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate chips) - the egg + other goodness (cream cheese and cool whip).

I made two batches. The first batch was regular. I halved the second batch and added 2 tablespoons of cinnamon to one half (with no chocolate chips) and added 1/4 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder, 1/4 cup peanut butter and 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips to the second half.

Serve with vanilla wafers, butter cookies or graham crackers.

Honey Lime Enchiladas

It's no secret that we eat Mexican food a few times a week.

Once in a while it's nice to mix things up. This dish, with it's sticky sweetness, did just the trick. It's so different that at first we weren't sure if we liked it. A few bites later and it was a hit. Enjoy!

Honey Lime Enchiladas
5 tablespoons honey
5 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 tablespoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pound chicken, cooked and shredded (I used rotisserie chicken)
8 flour tortillas
2 cups monterey jack cheese, shredded
16 ounces green enchilada sauce
1/2 cup heavy cream

Mix the first four ingredients and toss with shredded chicken. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Pour about 1/2 cup enchilada sauce on the bottom of a 9X13 baking pan. Fill flour tortillas with chicken and shredded cheese, saving about 1/2 cup of cheese to sprinkle on top of enchiladas.

Mix the remaining enchilada sauce with the cream. Pour sauce on top of the enchiladas and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes until brown and crispy on top.

I love each of these photos but I can't guarantee they'd all get wall time. What is the disconnect between pictures that make me smile and those I would actually hang in my home? I'm thinking of closing up this gap.

Wise Words

Last week a small portion of our worship team attended a conference in Virginia. Located at a Hillsong church, Aussie accents abounded and the music touched both my emotions and my spirit.

We also had the unique privilege of learning from worship leader Darlene Zschech, who speaks with humility and grace. There are still so many thoughts bouncing through my mind from the conference.

For now, I'll share favorite line of the weekend, spoken by Kevin Gerald:

I instantly thought of my marriage but over the past week so many other areas of life come to mind. Work, church, friendships, our apartment, my physical appearance and health.

Am I allowing myself to long for something "better", all the while neglecting what I already have? How can I, instead, facilitate growth?

Homemade Poptarts

Growing up my dad would make his grandmother's homemade biscuits nearly every Sunday morning. Our trip to the beach was no exception. Their buttery smell lured us from our heat and swim induced comas into the living room. Dropped by a spoon, they are oddly shaped and the perfect texture.

As is custom, my mom contributed to the tasty nostalgia with her mom's biscuit syrup. It's simple and (despite what my husband might think) divine: karo syrup and bits of butter.

In appreciation of my folks' years of dedicated breakfast service (or maybe just because I felt like it) I brought homemade brown sugar-cinnamon and strawberry poptarts. Prepared ahead and frozen, I coated them lightly with an egg and popped them in the oven for about 30 minutes.

Don't be discouraged if it's tough to make on your first go. Once I actually followed her "warm kitchen warning" it was pretty fool proof. These poptarts are delicious and quite capable of stirring up a few memories of their own.

Homemade Popsicles

Our family of ten (folks, siblings, hubby, brother-in-law and brother's girl) recently returned from the beach. We stayed in a condo decorated outside of the sand-and-sea theme, complete with rooftop pools and a lake.

The lake provided its own entertainment with snapping turtles, birds that swam underwater and an 8-foot gator. Before long we were quoting Troy and filling to-go boxes with our very own gator bait. We also rented scooters and had a few successful runs on the boogie board. It was too fun!

To ease the heat and encourage a little vacation indulgence, we made our own popsicles: creamsicle, root beer float and chocolate cream soda.

They are surprisingly more tasty than you might think and simple to make!

All you need:

3 oz. Dixie cups

Ice cream

Soda

Popsicle sticks

Cut a small slit in each cup for easy tearing.

Fill the bottom third of the cup with ice cream. Slowly pour in the soda, allowing time for the fizz to go down, until it reaches two-thirds full. Freeze for roughly 2 hours. Fill with ice cream. Freeze for 30 minutes. Add popsicle stick and freeze until solid. Remove cup and enjoy!

Practical Minimalism

My cousin, Rachel, recently started a blog documenting her journey to a less cluttered home. Her goal is to get rid of one item every day and just like in real life, she's candid and funny. You can read all about it here.

She's got me thinking: I could get into a more simplified life.

While we are always in need of a good declutter in our apartment, we often overlook other areas where less goes a long way.

We stay busy and life passes us by.

Perhaps minimalism applies to more than just material possessions. I'm inspired by Rachel's blog to look for ways to simplify our home and life.

Here's how I plan to get started:
1. Use less ingredients to make simpler meals.
2. Don't wash clothes as a default to folding.
3. Request an end to junk-mail that ends up in the trash.
4. Sit down and relax. Enjoy moments of free-time.
5. Once in a while, pick up the phone. Have a real conversation.
6. Save money. Go outside and have fun for free.

We're slowly learning to ask for wisdom and listen for guidance. It takes humility to realize that He knows better than me. It takes discernment to recognize His voice over the one in my head. It takes faith to move in the direction He is calling me. It sure is a slow process.

Summer Book Club

As you know, I am a bookworm.

To this day, my cousin makes fun of me for climbing up our front yard tree for an afternoon read when she visited us over the summer. (Wait. She teases me for crocheting in that tree. Fortunately, I don't recall it quite that way, so let's just say I was reading. Selective memory is a wonderful gift).

While living in Chattanooga, I would make a quick drive up the mountain and sit on the wall at Signal Point, engrossed in the latest read. The view beyond my book was breathtaking and the gentle breeze inspired me to stay a while.

Now, I'll snuggle up on the couch, the porch or next to my honey with eager eyes, scanning the page with anticipation for what happens next.

Ahhh, I still love a good book.

This summer I joined a book club small group through our church. A group of women, gathered over good food and chatting the night away about plot, characters and life application is just what this bookworm needs.

First up, we are reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I must admit, I finished it a tad early and cried myself to sleep - an absolutely beautiful story!

Do you have any suggestions for our next book? I recently enjoyed The Help by Kathryn Stockett and can't wait for the movie in August.

Our "New" TV Stand

As you may recall, Eric and I were on the hunt for a new TV stand back in February. Being avid craigslist-ers, we were determined to find a well-priced beauty we could adopt from another family.

I am here to encourage you, friends. Patience pays off.

We were lucky to find an antique, refinished buffet table - $200 total.

Do you revel in the benefits of craigslist? You can reduce the amount of material items in your home, increase your savings and/or find pre-loved, quality-made items that won't break the bank. Those are my excuses, anyway.

Gallery Walls

When we first moved into our apartment, I spent an unreasonable amount of time selecting my favorite pictures from our wedding and engagement as well as collecting the perfect assortment of rustic frames.

My mom helped transform it all into a collage for our living room.

Lately, I am drawn to another type of collage - gallery walls.

I especially appreciate gallery walls that are an eclectic mix of DIY pieces, hand-me-down paintings and artwork from garage sales and local thrift stores (like the ones pictured below).

Our quilt-covered couch is old and we hope to replace it soon. But you know what? I love our apartment, because it feels like home. Also, I must say that Eric is handsome and seeing him in a vest and tie makes me all schmoopy.

DIY Florals

Unfortunately, nothing grows in our shady apartment (my poor terrariums died long ago). I am desperate for a weekend project that brings permanent florals to our decor. Enjoy!

Stacked Plates

Because of this post, my mind is filled with a dainty, eclectic, [dancing when not] stacked plate collection.

Eric and I hit up a local thrift store where I found and carried about 20 heavy plates before deciding I have no idea how to start a collection. To pacify my craving, I bought this tiny white bowl with little flowers inside to hold my rings.

In keeping with Joy's advice, I'll continue to scour second-hand stores and Anthropologie sales. The plates below ring in at $7.95 a piece. At that price, I may get one of each!

Almond Butter

I mixed in a little honey and am dipping pretzel sticks in it for breakfast. It is delish - and healthy! I am still hungry after yesterday's run. I'd love to make almond butter myself one day like Sheena.

Pretty Polish

This past Sunday, my sister-in-law, mother-in-law and I went out for pedicures. This is a rare occurrence for me as I am reluctant to pay for luxury. Sitting in the chair having my feet massaged I thought, "I could get used to this."
Twenty-eight dollars and a tip later, I remembered why I can't.

The polish, however, is oh-so-pretty.
I plan to buy my own bottle and paint my toesies for free.

7-Layer Chocolate Fudge Cake

Today's post will be short and very sweet.

My parents made this cake a lot when we were growing up. The fudge is absolutely decadent. It tastes best the second day and I would recommend serving it in thin slices because it's so rich. I made it for a friend's shower a while back and totally forgot to share it with you.

7-Layer Chocolate Fudge Cake
Cake Mix:
5 eggs
1 stick of butter
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups sugar
1 cup crisco oil
2 cups self rising flour
1 1/2 tsp vanilla

Icing:

4 cups sugar

4 squares Bakers unsweetened chocolate

2 sticks of butter

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup milk

Cake Directions:

Grease and flour 7 (9-inch) round cake pans.

Beat eggs. Add sugar, butter, oil, vanilla, flour and buttermilk - beating between each ingredient. Pour evenly into all 7 pans. Bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes or until done.

Icing Directions:

Put all ingredients (excluding vanilla) into a deep pot on stove top. Stir over medium heat until dissolved. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, then remove from heat. Add vanilla and stir.

Prepare sink with about 3 inches of cold water and ice. Put pot in sink and stir constantly until icing thickens and begins to harden. Immediately spread on first layer, adding a layer of cake and icing as you go.

It's said that a picture speaks a thousand words. It stills a moment in time and allows others to emotionally connect with the event.

excitement. joy. laughter.

fear. anger. despair.

hope. faith. peace.

And then there is reality. A panoramic, 360 degree view that makes your heart race and leaves you speechless.

The recent tornado damage in our state moves me to tears. I can't imagine the heartache of families who lost their loved ones, homes and livelihood. When an opportunity arose for Eric and I to join our church in a day trip to Tuscaloosa, we were eager to help. It was a great privilege to work alongside 18 other volunteers and clear debris in Ms. Beverly's yard.

Seeing the devastation in person was truly life changing. The historic neighborhood, once shaded by beautiful trees, now bakes in the sun, illuminating the quiet chaos of a desolate street. Ms. Beverly survived the storm in a tiny hallway, while her bedroom was sucked away, the top floor seemingly disappeared and her entire home was littered with insulation.

It was only by the grace of God.

Ms. Beverly's home was destroyed by fire just five years ago. She rebuilt then and says she will rebuild again. I was struck by her smile as she discussed such things; her hope for the future, her faith in God's goodness, her peace despite the pain. And I pray that her peace remains.

In-store Inspiration

When Eric and I last visited Chattanooga, we stopped at a local shop to kill time before meeting up with our friends. The jars hanging right inside the front door were so enchanting. Upon breaking my gaze, I raced out to the truck for our camera and snapped a quick picture.

I so appreciate in-store inspiration, don't you? It doesn't always lead to an in-store purchase, but it certainly gets my creativity flowing.

I can't wait to try out my own version of this simple beauty.

Mexican Pizza

It's no secret: we love Mexican food and we love pizza. Are you surprised that we also love Mexican food on pizza?! I didn't think so.

Last week, we threw together a new regular, courtesy of Annie's Eats. The black bean sauce makes this unique and flavorful. You can find the original recipe here. Our version and (sad) pics are below. Enjoy!

Mexican Pizza

Your favorite pizza crust

8 oz (or 1/2 can) black beans, rinsed and drained

8 oz tomato sauce

1 chipotle pepper, in adobe sauce

1/2 tsp cumin

1/4 tsp paprika

1/4 tsp cayenne

2 TBSP water

6 oz shredded Mexican cheese

1 jalapeno, seeded and diced

1/3 cup tomato, seeded and diced

1/3 cup frozen corn

salt

pepper

4 TBSP fresh cilantro, chopped

Preheat oven as directed for crust.

In food processor combine black beans, tomato sauce, chipotle pepper, cumin, paprika and cayenne. Puree until ground into a sauce. Add 2 TBSP of water and puree for 1 additional minute.

Spread black bean sauce over crust. Top evenly with cheese, jalapeno, tomato, corn, salt and pepper. Bake as directed. Top with fresh cilantro. Eat up!

Retro Recover

Quite a while back, I was perusing the thrift store with my mother-in-law in Nashville. We were headed out when I spotted a footstool against the front wall. With beautiful retro legs and a price tag of $5, I couldn't pass it up!

Once home, I deemed the cushion wide enough to pass for extra seating in our living room and placed it right in front of the fireplace.

And there it sat. And sat.

Until my mom and I found the perfect velvet fabric on clearance and went to work. I will admit, she completed most of this project and where you see a flaw, it was likely done by me.

I love how it turned out.

That almost ugly pink with those brass-foot legs. Swoon!

Side note: we picked up the side table at a dumpster in Chattanooga. Eric was at first mortified, but later sawed off the tabs on the middle shelf to make room for temporary record storage. I'd love to paint it but can't decide on a color. Any suggestions?

Roasted Red Pepper Green Beans

Last night, Eric requested Chicken Picatta for dinner. It's a quick, easy and scrumptious dish from Macaroni and Cheesecake. We needed a few sides and settled on the reliable combination of green beans and corn. We opted for fresh green beans and frozen corn, and folks, I will never return to the can.

The corn cooks up in 5 minutes and tastes like it was just sliced from the cob. The only seasoning required is salt, pepper and a little Smart Balance.

The green beans, oh, the green beans! I'm no stranger to fresh green beans, but, thanks to a suggestion from a friend, we spiced up our usual routine and I'd love to share it with you.

Roasted Green Beans
Fresh green beans
Olive oil
Sea salt
Pepper
Red pepper flakes
Parmesan cheese (grated)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix to coat evenly. Spread green beans onto a large cookie sheet and discard excess oil. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, flipping beans over halfway through cooking time.

Fun for a Girl or a Boy

Last Monday, Eric and I took off work to enjoy my birthday. After eating dinner at Chuy's, we stopped by Urban Outfitters to check out their sale rack. Apparently, no one told them it was my birthday because I didn't find a single thing. Eric, however, found a sweater, a vinyl record and this:

It's a Stylophone Retro Pocket Synthesizer (although whose pocket it will fit in, I'm not sure). Originally produced in the late 60's as a toy, the stylophone eventually found it's way into recording studios as an instrument of sorts. It's seen such use in recent years by The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes.

History aside, this guy is fun.

And if you know a guy, chances are he'll have fun with it, too. We found it on sale for $9.99 at UO. You can also purchase one for $18.99 on Amazon.

Take Small Steps

It's been some time since I shared one of my 2011 goals. I realize it's already May and posting on resolutions is the thing of four months ago. To keep you interested, today's goal will include a report of how it's going so far. Be sure to read on because this one is exciting!

Goal number 5: Research and act on career opportunities. Take small steps.

Sounds boring and predictable so far, right? Let me explain.

As a somewhat newlywed (approaching 2 years) and a somewhat recent college graduate (4 years - okay, not so recent), I am enjoying time with my husband and growth in my career. If you know me personally, you are probably aware that I don't work a dream job. I am content and glad to contribute to our income.

There is, however, something I've wanted for quite some time now. To be a mom. To have a chubby baby with Eric that we can cuddle with and watch grow into a toddler, kid, teen and one day - a young adult. In fact, if nature allows, I'll happily have a few of them.

We're not ready to have kids yet (sorry Mema!) but when the times comes, I want to stay at home. I trust that God has his hand on our marriage and future family and, if we use wisdom, he will help us realize this dream.

What does this have to do with my career? Everything.

In college, I tossed around the idea of being a Journalism major. I was a book worm growing up (summer days spent reading in a tree, anyone?) and thought writing would be a perfect extension of my passion. Then I got scared. What if I couldn't find a job or make good money? So I took business courses instead, graduated and found a great job.

The longing to write was still there and a little over a year ago, my sweet husband encouraged me to start a blog. It's been a wonderful journey.

As I pondered my goals for 2011, my mind focused in on "take small steps." This made everything sound easier. I want to write. There are local magazines in Birmingham. Small step: send an email to a local magazine editor.

I did. She was so gracious to meet me for coffee, offer advice and an opportunity to work as a freelance writer for her magazine. It's silly I know, but I could cry. As I type this, a beautiful picture runs through my head. Me, doing what I love: taking care of our home, spending time with husband and our little munchkins, and writing. Writing! I hope and pray that this small step leads to big opportunities so that I can one day stay at home, contribute to our income and challenge my mind.

Tomorrow, I'll share my first published article with you.

First up: I recently joined the writers of the music blog Birmingham Box Set. It is an extension of Birmingham Magazine and includes concert reviews, music news and interviews. As you know, I love going to concerts with my hubby. He and I are proving to be a great team in coming up with good questions - I certainly couldn't do it without him.

Saturday afternoon, I talked with Jack Oblivian, a Memphis-based garage rock musician. He was friendly, humble and pretty funny too.

As you know, many in our region lost their homes and loved ones in the tornadoes that ravaged the southeast last week. The stories pouring forth each day contain both the heartbreaking and the miraculous.

As relief efforts begin, thousands are rallying together to provide necessities to those in need. Local churches are collecting donations and volunteers are collecting debris. It is truly touching.

A sweet college student in our church, Susannah, is donating all proceeds from her Etsy shop to tornado relief efforts. Go to I Love Little Buddies to make a purchase.

This year's season of Lent held new meaning for me.

Our church observed Lent through personal choices regarding self denial and a focused time in God's word. Chris delivered a series on what Christ accomplished at the cross: He took our place, won our victory, gave us freedom, paid our debt, forgave our sin and made us clean.

It is a humbling process to consider Christ's sacrifice for our gain.

In full disclosure, I have not held true to my promises regarding Lent. I have faltered. But I have also been drawn to Christ in such a way as never before.

Jars for the Pantry

It's been a long time, friends.

I'd like to share a simple project Eric and I did this weekend.

For some reason, an organized and pretty kitchen invites me to whip up the latest entrée or dessert while a messy and boring kitchen banishes us to eating out.

So, we transferred many of our dry goods from bags and boxes to mason jars with scalloped labels. Check out the before and after below.

Makes me smile.

I've seen pictures of an entire pantry in jars and it's mesmerizing. I've got extras - can you think of other staples that would benefit from living in a jar?

Also, you may be asking, "Why did this project require two people?" Well, let me tell you. Eric washed out the jars while I was making dinner. Washing has to be the least enjoyable part of any project. Then, I filled the jars, penned the label with a brown sharpie and stuck it on. When a few of the corners had trouble adjusting to their curved environment, Eric wrapped them with my stretchy headbands until they learned to stay in place. We joked that it looked like torture. No, two people aren't necessary - but it's a lot more fun!

Have I mentioned my craigslist addiction? It is out of control, people. Not so much the purchasing as the looking, looking and more looking. Today I'm making a ten dollar purchase that I'll be sure to share with you soon!

The Art of Brick Laying

Through an inspiring book and our newlywed small group, we stumbled upon the simple, yet revolutionary concept of brick laying.

I am so challenged by this!

Life is not formed by great catastrophe or triumph, but by the small choices we make each day. How easy it is to overlook our daily actions and interactions with others!

I am now in the painstaking process of forming daily bricks for the foundation of my life: attentiveness to my husband, quiet time with God, pursuing passions and interests and even menial tasks like straightening up our apartment before bed. These desires encompass many of my goals for the year, with one small difference. I now know that they can not be accomplished overnight.

Goals are realized only by a daily investment of laying bricks.

What better visual inspiration for brick laying that the picture above? Through hard work and daily dedication, Caryn, created a lovely quilt for warmth, snuggling and cheery thoughts whenever needed.

I would love to recreate this, however, my sewing skills are extremely limited. Instead, I'll start on an apron using the fabric I bought nearly 6 months ago.

What's Old is New

Eric and I hung out with a fun couple this past weekend, playing games and watching a rather silly British comedy.

Among other inspiring and just plain cool pieces in their home, I was drawn to the dresser they used as a TV stand. We happen to be in need of a new TV stand and I'm now scouring craigslist for the perfect fixer-upper.

Last night, I was introduced to The Head and The Heart by way of Dr. Dog. Eric and I had a chill evening taking in vocal harmonies, percussive beats and oscillating cassette tapes. It was different and fun, to say the least!

This group is made up of five guys and one girl and includes guitar, bass, drums, keys, violin and a trio of beautiful voices. Below is an acoustic, snap fingers version of Honey Come Home - my absolute favorite song of the night. It's sad, sincere, sweet, touching. Do yourself a favor and listen all the way to the end.

My sister and I recently had a sad epiphany: neither of us has a true hobby. Sure, we like to have fun with our family and friends, but nothing in particular inspires us to action when we are alone.

She googled "hobbies for women" on her smart phone.

We had a good laugh at some of the suggestions and found a few that sounded enjoyable. Baking, sewing, crafts... you get the picture. Then, the inevitable guilt set in. These things cost money! And what on earth will we do with the cupcakes, pillowcases and headbands we make? What a waste!

So we shelved the idea and returned to our semi-depressed state on the couch.

Until we realized: our sweet husbands have plenty to do on a day off when no one else is around. Hers hunts, fishes and golfs; mine plays guitar, climbs, hikes and they both like to bike. Heaven knows these things cost money - and yet we have happier homes as a result of their pursuits. Which brings us to my next goal for the new year.

Goal number 4: Explore interests and passions. Find new ones.

For now, I have baking on the brain. And a pretty new pedestal to display my efforts, courtesy of Eric's sister. It's a start!

The Hardest Button to Button

Last night I worked out for the first time in months. This is sad, people. I want to give you excuses about the holidays and our crazy, busy schedule but they all sound lame. Which brings me to my next goal for 2011.

Goal number 3: Get in shape - have fun while working out.

This, my friends, is the hardest button to button.

I want to be healthy but I lack motivation. Hence the "have fun" addendum of my goal. I hope that by keeping a smile on my face I can convince myself that working out is an enjoyable hobby and something to look forward to.

While Eric and his friend Owen hit the weights, I went to a spin class and did, in fact, enjoy myself. My bum is rather sore today from the seat and I feel a proud sliver of accomplishment each time it hurts.

My favorite way to have fun while working out is to hit the great outdoors. And when spring finally arrives, I plan to do just that.

Music to My Ears

During our New Years trip to Nashville, we visited Grimey's and Third Man Records to drop a few dollars on new music. I found The Ettes on vinyl and Eric purchased two cd's of my new favorite band: The Greenhornes.

The Greenhornes - 4 Stars

You may remember two of these guys from The Raconteurs, where they joined forces with Jack White to create two hip and rocking albums. We saw them in concert at the Ryman a few years ago and I smiled the entire time (this may have something to do with the fact that Jack White was wearing a gold jacket and pants with proportionally correct bone placement painted on the front and back, which totally cracked me up).

Garage rock mixed with "oooh's" and "aah's", a droning keyboard or twangy guitar make for an endearing sound that draws me in each time Eric hits play. I'm washing dishes or reading a magazine and can't keep myself from saying, "I really like these guys!" over and over. Good thing we are going to see them in Chattanooga in April where they will follow an amazing opening band, Hacienda. Below is a video of one of my favorite songs from their latest album. It's acoustic and different than most of their songs, but a lovely way to introduce you to them.

I must admit, however, I am currently addicted to one of their older albums, Dual Mono. Be sure to check it out for yourself as I couldn't find any good quality videos to share with you. Two of the songs feature the lovely and peculiar voice of Holly Golightly and all of the songs are my favorite.

Craigslist Chair

It reminds me of this beauty from Urban Outfitters (cost - $248).

I am doing a daily craigslist search to find a new chair for our living room. The original one was moved to the dining room to make space for the Christmas tree and there it shall stay. Now, when I'm cooking dinner, my honey sits in a cozy chair nearby to play his acoustic guitar or chat with me about our day.

This chair isn't "the one" but I thought you'd like to see it any way.

Nine Lives

Our war on clutter concluded this weekend with the dreaded guest bedroom. The (thankfully) enormous closet busted at the seams with outdoor gear, old books, unfinished projects, a desktop computer and much more. We pulled out every box, emptied and refilled, made trash piles and new thrift store piles and purposefully organized the contents back into their (now spacious) home.

During the process, I came across the Nikon camera I received for Christmas many years ago. So long ago that 3.2 megapixels was nice. I remembered that it does not turn on anymore and the SD card is stuck. I tossed it into the "would anyone want this for parts?" pile and went about my work.

Eric got the SD card out and turned the camera on. What?!

This camera has nine lives.

During a backpacking trip with our dear friends, Sam and Rebecca, I took one picture and then dropped it in the sand on the bank of the creek. It was toast. Eric's dad took it apart and it functioned perfectly.

Then, Eric borrowed it on a trip to North Carolina with his friend, Wes. Ice tools in hand, they climbed a 250' frozen waterfall on Whiteside Mountain. Once at the top, Wes dropped the camera. In slow motion, it fell all the way down and lodged itself in a deep mound of snow. Eric rescued it, set it in front of the car heater on the drive home and it thawed out nicely. (Below are a few amazing pictures from their trip, including the mountainside the camera was dropped from).

See? Nine lives. I'm so excited, though, because it made for such a nice segue into my next goal for 2011.

Goal Number 2: Take more pictures - bring a camera along!

We now have Eric's Canon, my Nikon and my new Polaroid Instant Camera. No excuses. This year, we are making memories and taking note of them.

A New Year

This past fall I traveled to Chattanooga for work. Finding myself alone in my most favorite of places, I browsed Frasier Ave like a regular tourist and brought home a few inexpensive treats.

One such treat was an tiny, old-school journalist flip-top notepad. I have always wanted to be the woman who jots down ideas and thoughts as she goes throughout her day so she can actually remember them later.

Finally, it has a job. Storing my 2011 goals.

I've never written resolutions before. I am not much one for setting goals. But I have this notepad now and it is begging to be used.

It works like a charm.

Goal number 1: Keep a clean, organized home.

Simple enough, right? As soon as our feet hit the cush apartment floor Sunday afternoon, we made a beeline for the bedroom closet and organized to our hearts content. We have since organized the kitchen cabinets (even under the sink!) the bathroom and laundry room. Old, unused items are sitting in garbage bags awaiting their ride to the thrift store. Everthing in it's place.

My mom helped us in this endeavor with the cute-as-pie owl letter holder she gave me for Christmas. Mail seems to make its way into every nook and cranny in our apartment and I'm sure it feels special now that it has a home.

In closing (seems like the right thing to say at the end of such a long post), this blog needs more lovin' and I intend to show it how much I care, starting today.

Birds of a Feather

As you may have guessed from my blog title, I love birds. This obsession started when I was planning our wedding and wanted their cute little feathers everywhere.

When we were in Nashville last week, Eric took me to this awesome shop called Pre to Post Modern.

I found myself in quirky vintage heaven. I also found myself a precious new framed print for $15. Two owls, side by side on a branch. Cute as pie. Eric approved and I walked out grinning from ear to ear (especially thrilled because when I brought home an embroidered owl from my garage sale adventure he just laughed and shook his head).

I would love to take a picture for you, but I can't upload anything since our camera cord was resting in the laptop case when it was stolen. Hopefully we will replace it soon and I can show you a few recent projects.

Local Favorites: Restaurants

A couple of weeks ago, Eric and I started Eating for Life, a diet that considers portion size, eating six times per day and balancing the nutrients contained in each meal. I am doing it for weight loss and Eric is doing it for different reasons: namely, it's what I am cooking. He doesn't need to lose weight and I happen to like him as-is. He is a supportive husband who fills up on the leftovers.

Things were going swimmingly until we arrived in Nashville Wednesday night. Our four-day food detour started with Thanksgiving and ended with Chuy's two days in a row. I kid you not. Saturday night in Nashville and last night in Birmingham. The food is that good, people.

We first ate at Chuy's in it's hometown of Austin, TX while visiting my cousin and her husband. We fell in love. The chips and salsa alone did us in. We are salsa snobs, remember? They have now moved to the southeast and I am deeming them local.

Eric (almost) always gets the Chuy-changa. My favorites range from stuffed peppers to flautas to crunchy or soft tacos. The tortillas are hand-made. The queso and 7 signature sauces are to die for.

Today I'll head to the grocery store to prepare for this week's meals. All the while I'll be dreaming of Chuy's.

Stacked Firewood is Cozy

I spent a considerable amount of my weekend hot-gluing coffee filters (and my fingers, for that matter) in an attempt to make this wreath. My husband complained that he wasn't well fed or attended to during this project. Whoops!

I'm hoping to make the most of my time tonight by creating this garland and collecting a few more books to make this tree. Then, it's up with the decorations.

What would make my winter wonderland complete but a fireplace full of stacked wood. So Cozy.

Apartment living is wonderful. Our place suits our life and style and we love it. Unfortunately, lack of space often leads to lack of organization. With the help of my mom, and year-round spring cleaning, we've done a pretty good job of assigning items their place and keeping them there.

The problem is that we are missing a foyer. No place to put our keys or mail when we walk through the door, which drives me crazy.

In college, I wore a hoodie every day. And loved it. Until someone broke my heart and asked if I could dress up for a change. Whoops. I mixed up my wardrobe and found I liked it better that way. This wet, rainy day makes me want to cozy up in a nice warm blanket and take a nap. I am digging these hobo inspired throws, from Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, respectively.
